We had to patiently wait while the wildebeest assessed the river. They approached the edge, we held our breath. Then a few would turn and swirl away, taking off along the river edge and the rest would follow, dragging thousands of animals along in the momentum. Racing along the upper bank, they would then break out into the open grassland, mill around aimlessly, then move back to the river's edge to start all over again.
